Not For MeMatthew 7:11

The Message You Did Not Send

This message is for the long paragraph of faith you typed out for her at eleven at night, and the two lines about your own thing that you deleted before you hit send

You typed it at about eleven at night, sitting up in bed with the lamp still on.

Four paragraphs. Maybe five. You told her that God has not lost track of a single day of this, that the waiting is not a verdict, that He is not the kind of Father who goes quiet on His own daughter. You told her that you were going to keep asking about it and that she did not have to be strong on the phone with you.

You read it back once and you did not change a word, because you meant it.

And then, right at the bottom, you added two lines about your own thing. Just two. Nothing dramatic. Something like, honestly this week has been hard, and I could use prayer about the situation you know about.

You looked at those two lines for a while.

And then you put the cursor at the end and you held the delete key down until they were gone, and you watched the paragraph shrink back up the screen, and then you sent her the rest.

She replied about twenty minutes later saying that she cried, and that she needed that tonight, and that she does not know how you always know.

And you are sitting there now with your phone face down on the duvet, and you have not turned the lamp off yet.

I want to say something before anything else, because I think you are already halfway to being hard on yourself about this and I would like to get there first.

I am not catching you out.

There is nothing here that you have not known about yourself for a long time. I have not spotted a flaw and held it up to the light. I am not going to tell you that you are inconsistent, and I am not going to give you a talk about self care, and I am not going to suggest that the reason your own thing has not moved is that you keep deleting your own sentences.

I am just saying that I saw the two lines. That is all. And I think they were good lines.

The good things you hand out

Here is what I want you to notice, and it is not the deleting.

It is the four paragraphs.

You did not scrape those together. You did not manage a polite religious sentence and then go to sleep. You wrote with your whole chest, at eleven at night, tired, about a God nobody had to talk you into. Every line of it was load bearing and you knew it while you typed.

So let me say the thing that is actually true about you, and let me say it plainly, because I do not think anyone has said it to you in a while.

You are not a person with a faith problem. You have a working faith, and you were using it forty minutes ago. I am not making that up to be encouraging. I am saying back to you what the Holy Spirit was doing through your thumbs at eleven o'clock at night. He was carrying what is written rather than anything you invented, and the same Spirit who moved you to write is in the room now that the writing is done.

There is one name it will not stretch to, and that is a different thing entirely from not having any.

Look at the sentence Jesus builds this on.

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?Matthew 7:11

Read how the argument runs, because it does not run the way we expect.

It does not start with God and reason down to us. It starts with you. It starts with what you already do without thinking, the ordinary decency of a person who would not hand a hungry child a stone, and then it says: how much more.

Which means the four paragraphs you wrote for her are not evidence against you. They are the front half of the verse. They are the thing Jesus points at and says, now multiply that, and you will begin to have some idea what the Father is like toward the one asking.

And here is where I want to turn and speak straight at you.

You are already in the good things clause. Not one day, not once the situation improves. Right now, as you read this, with the lamp on and the phone face down, you are one of the them that ask him, and the asking is the only entry requirement the verse names. I am not speaking my own idea over you. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit who makes a written line land in a real chest at eleven at night.

Now, why did the two lines come out?

I do not think it was doubt about God. I think it was something much more ordinary and much harder to see. Somewhere along the line you became the one who carries. The one people ring. The one who knows what to say. And a person in that position slowly starts operating as though grace is something they distribute rather than something they are also standing in.

That is not sin and it is not weakness. Mostly it is what happens to a person who has done a great deal of the carrying and has never once been carried in front of an audience.

But hear this, because it is finished and not pending: you have the same access she has. Not a lesser version of it, not a staff entrance round the back. The word says good things to them that ask him, and there is no clause in it about who has been strongest lately. The Holy Spirit does not check your service record before He carries your request.

And your own two lines were a prayer. They were, actually. Short, honest, unembellished, exactly the kind of thing the psalms are full of. You did not delete a weakness off the screen that night. You deleted a prayer.

The breakthrough

So we are going to put the two lines back in.

Not fix you. Not talk you into anything. We are going to take the exact request you deleted, the one that was true enough to type in the first place, and we are going to put it somewhere it can stay.

If it feels awkward, that is expected and it is not a failure. It has been a long time since you stood inside one of your own sentences, and doing it now will feel like walking into a room you normally only look into from the hall.

So take this in before you do it. You are permitted to ask for yourself, and the permission was not issued tonight; Matthew 7:11 was written long before this week, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line and sets it down in a real chest at eleven at night.

And you do not have to feel differently for this to be true. This is not about producing a feeling at eleven at night. It is about a person who asks, asking, and a Father who is called how much more, being exactly what He is called.

Declare this over yourself

Say these over your own name. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that was as true at eleven o'clock as it is now; the authority in these words is His, delegated to you and carried in His Name, and His Spirit is the one who makes what is written speakable. And however He answers about your own thing, and He answers in His own way and His own manner, you are inside the promise the whole time He is doing it.

  1. Delete key, you are not discernment and you never were, and my own two lines are going back in the box. The word of God says good things go to them that ask, and I am one of them that ask, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that my request is the one that would be too much, you are not humility and I am not keeping you. Jesus said how much more, and the Holy Spirit put those four paragraphs in me tonight, so I am asking for myself with the same mouth.
  3. Father, You saw the two lines before I deleted them and You have been holding them ever since. You are called how much more, and that is written down rather than wished for. I am asking You out loud for my own thing tonight, and I am not shrinking it on the way out.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
