You wrote it by hand, which you almost never do.
Four pages, because it took four pages to say it properly. She had gone through something that had taken the floor out from under her, and she had said the thing on the phone that people say when they have stopped believing they are wanted, and you could not let that stand.
So you sat at the window with the tea going cold and you wrote it out.
You told her that God is not disappointed in her. You told her that He has not sighed once about any of this. You told her that she is not tolerated, she is delighted in, and that there is a difference and the difference is the whole gospel. You wrote out the verse about Him rejoicing over her with singing and you did not soften it or hedge it, because you have never believed in hedging that one.
You read it back once and you did not change a word.
Then you addressed the envelope and walked it down to the postbox at the end of the lane, in the rain, because it felt like the sort of thing that should not wait until morning.
And on the way back you thought, mildly, without any drama at all: I could not write one line of that to myself.
Not one. Not the first sentence. If you sat down at that window and put your own name at the top of a page, the pen would simply stop.
Let me say something before we go any further, because I do not want you carrying this the wrong way.
I am not catching you out.
There is nothing here to be embarrassed about. I have not found a crack. I am not going to call this a contradiction and I am not going to tell you that your own situation is stuck because you will not write yourself a letter.
I am saying I walked back up the lane with you. That is all.
What He does over the one He has
Here is the verse you copied out for her in your own handwriting.
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.Zephaniah 3:17
Look at the middle clause, the one everybody skips because the singing is more striking.
He will rest in his love.
The older sense of that word is quieter than rest. It carries the idea of being silent, of having nothing further to say on the subject. The case is closed. There is no ongoing deliberation about whether she is wanted, and God is not still weighing it up.
You copied that out for her without hesitating.
So let me turn and say it to you directly, standing in a wet lane with the postbox behind you.
You are the one He is silent over. Not one day, not when this season lifts, not when you have finished being the person everybody writes to. Right now, walking back up that lane, you are inside the same verse you posted twenty minutes ago, because the LORD thy God in the midst of thee is a phrase about proximity rather than about performance. That is not my kindness to you. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit who takes a written line and lands it on a real person in a real lane in the rain.
Now, why did the pen stop?
I have sat with a lot of people in this exact spot and it is almost never doubt about God's character. Your view of His character is not in question; you just spent four pages defending it.
It is that you can see the inside of your own head. She gets the benefit of the doubt because her interior is hidden from you and you assume the best about it, which is right and good. Your own interior is fully visible from where you sit, and it has been marked strictly since somewhere around nineteen.
That is not sin and it is not weakness. It is what happens to someone thoughtful who has been the letter writer in a lot of people's worst weeks.
But look again at the grammar of Zephaniah. It does not say the LORD thy God in the midst of thee approves of what He sees. It says is mighty, and then it says He will save, and every verb in the sentence is His. She is not the subject of a single one of them. Neither are you.
And hear this, because it is settled rather than pending. You have a God who has stopped deliberating about you. The word says He rests in His love, and resting is not something a person does while a decision is still open, and it is His Spirit who carries that from a page into a chest at the end of a wet lane.
You did not soften that verse for her. Do not soften it for yourself.
So we are going to address one to you.
Not fix you. Not talk you into anything, because you cannot be talked into this and I would not try. We are going to take the letter you posted tonight and change the name at the top, and leave everything else exactly as it stands.
If your pen stops, that is expected and it is not a failure. It has been a long time since a page began with your own name on it in your own hand.
So take this in before you write. You are already the one He is quiet over, and that was true while the pen was stopping; Zephaniah 3 was written long before this evening, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what is written and sets it down in a real room, at a real window, with the rain still on your coat.
And it does not start being true when you feel it. It is true now. This is not about producing warmth at a cold window. It is about a letter writer finally standing on the receiving end of her own handwriting.
Declare this over yourself
Say these over your own name. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that has been true through every year you marked yourself strictly; the authority in these words is His, delegated to you and carried in His Name, and His Spirit is the one who makes what is written speakable. And however He answers about the thing you have not put on any page, and He answers in His own way and His own manner, you are inside the promise the whole time He is doing it.
- Blank first line of my own letter, you are not staying blank, and the God who sings over her is singing over this house. It is written that the LORD my God in the midst of me is mighty, and in the midst is a phrase about where He stands rather than about how I have done.
- Habit of reading my own interior as evidence against me, you are overruled tonight, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit did not carry four pages out of me and then stop at my own front door.
- Lord, You rest in Your love and You have nothing further to say on the subject of whether I am wanted. It is written that You joy over me with singing, and I am putting my own name at the top of the page tonight.
