Not For MeNumbers 6:24

Every Name But Mine At The Table

This message is for the blessing you say over the family by name at every meal, in which you have never once included your own name

Sunday. Fourteen people, two tables pushed together, and the good cloth that only comes out when your mother is coming.

You stand up because you always stand up, and the noise drops the way it always does, and you begin.

You bless your mother first, by name. Then your brother and his wife. Then the children, all four of them, one at a time, and you slow down for the youngest because she went quiet this month and everybody in that room knows why. You bless the ones who could not come. You bless the house. You bless the food and the hands that made it and the week that is about to start.

Twenty seconds, maybe thirty. Nobody rushes you.

Then everybody says amen and the noise comes straight back up, and your brother reaches across for the bread before you have sat down, and the youngest one laughs at something, and it is a good table.

And you sit down and pick up your fork.

And you did it again.

Every name in that room was in the blessing except one.

It is not that you forgot. You have never forgotten. You go round that table in the same order every week and your own chair is simply not on the route. It is the way a person walks past their own front door on the way to somewhere else.

Before we go one step further, hear me.

I am not correcting you.

There is nothing here you should have noticed years ago and did not. I am not going to hold this up and call it a flaw, because it is not one, and I am not going to suggest that the thing you are quietly carrying is still with you because you have been blessing everybody but yourself.

I am saying I heard the whole blessing. Including the gap. That is all.

Whose blessing it is

Look at the oldest blessing we have, and look at who is doing what in it.

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: the LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: the LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.Numbers 6:24-26

Count the verbs. Bless. Keep. Shine. Be gracious. Lift up. Give.

Every one of them belongs to the LORD. Not one of them belongs to Aaron, and Aaron was the man saying it out loud, week after week, over an entire nation, for the whole of his working life.

Which means the words you say standing up on a Sunday are not yours. Nothing is being generated at that table. Something already prepared is being handed round, the way bread that somebody else baked gets handed round, and God has been the baker the entire time.

So let me turn and say it straight to you, because nobody in that room is going to do it while you are the one standing.

You are inside that blessing. Not one day, not when your own situation clears, not once you have finished carrying this family. Right now, with your fork in your hand and the noise back up around you, you are standing under the same words you just spoke, because the LORD does the blessing and the LORD has never once been told to skip a chair. That is not me being kind. That is what is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a written line down onto a real man at a real table.

Now, why does the route go round your chair?

I do not think it is modesty, though it wears the clothes of modesty. I think it is a job description you accepted a long time ago, probably younger than you should have.

Somewhere in this family you became the one who says the words. And a man who says the words starts to think of himself as the mouth rather than as one of the people the words are for. He is the tap, not the glass. The bread goes through his hands and he assumes the loaf is not for him.

That is not sin. That is what happens to a man who has been standing up on Sundays for twenty years while everybody else stayed sitting.

But look at the next verse, which almost nobody quotes.

And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.Numbers 6:27

I will bless them. God takes the responsibility for the blessing back into His own hands in the very next sentence. Aaron puts the Name on the people; God does the blessing. The mouth is not the source, and the mouth was never excluded from the crowd.

And take this in, because it is already decided rather than pending. You have the LORD's face turned toward you exactly as much as your mother does. The word says He lifts up His countenance and gives peace, and it is His Spirit who carries that from a written page into a real week. There is no version of that verse where the man saying it stands outside it.

The breakthrough

So we are going to put your name on the route.

Not change the blessing. Not shorten anybody else's turn, because their turns are real and God is genuinely in them. We are simply going to keep going once we reach your chair.

If it comes out awkwardly, expect it, and do not read it as failure. Twenty years of walking past a chair will make a man's mouth strange when he finally stops at it.

So hear it said over you before you speak. You are one of the ones the Name goes on, and that was decided in Numbers 6 long before you ever stood up at a Sunday table; the Holy Spirit is the one who brings what is written and sets it down in a real house, on a real afternoon, with the plates still out.

And nothing has to feel different for this to be true. This is not about producing a feeling with your fork in your hand. It is about the man who says the words finally standing inside them.

Declare this over yourself

Say these over your own name. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that has been true on every Sunday you walked past your own chair; the authority in these words is His, delegated to you and carried in His Name, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written live in a real mouth. And however He answers about the thing you are carrying, and He answers in His own way and His own manner, you are inside the blessing the whole time He is doing it.

  1. Blessing I have spoken over everyone but me, you are coming back down this table, and you are stopping at my chair. The word of God says the LORD blesses and the LORD keeps, and the LORD was never handed a list with my seat crossed off it.
  2. Job description I took on at twenty three, you are not my identity and I am putting you down, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit did not make me the mouth so that I could stand outside the room He was filling.
  3. Lord, You lift up Your countenance and You give peace, and it is written that You are the one who does the blessing, not the man who says it. My name goes on the route this Sunday, and I am saying it out loud with the rest of them.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
