They always leave with something.
Containers, mostly. Whatever was left over, packed while they are still putting their shoes on, because nobody walks out of your house carrying nothing. And then they get to the steps and you stand in the doorway with the light behind you and you say it.
You say it over every one of them. Go safe. God go in front of you on that road. He is going with you and He is coming back for you. Nothing on that road belongs to you and nothing on that road gets to keep you.
You have been saying some version of it since before your oldest could walk. Your hand goes up without you deciding it. Half the street knows the shape of your voice doing that from four houses down.
Then the cars go and the road is quiet and you turn around and walk back into your own house.
And there is nothing.
Not sadness. Nothing that dramatic. Just a man walking back down his own hall with the light on, past the coats, into a kitchen with the containers all gone, and the sentence he has just said eleven times does not follow him in.
You have never once said it about yourself walking in.
Let me be careful here, because this is the kind of thing a man hears as an accusation whether or not it was meant as one.
I am not accusing you of anything.
There is no fault in this. It is not hypocrisy and it is not a lack of anything. The blessing you spoke on that step was real, and God was in it, and whatever happens on those roads tonight, it was a good and true thing to say and you meant every word.
I am saying I watched you turn around. That is all. And I want to walk back in with you.
Both halves of the sentence
Here is the verse your doorway blessing came from, whether or not you ever knew it.
The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.Psalm 121:8
Now look at what is in that line, because it has two halves and you only ever use one.
Thy going out. That is the part you say on the step. That is the road, the car, the journey, the leaving. Twenty years of faithfully preaching the first half of Psalm 121:8 to this family, out loud, on the step, with the light behind you.
And thy coming in. That is the hall. The coats. The kitchen with the containers gone. That is a man walking back through his own door at half past nine at night, and God put it in the same sentence, with the same verb, under the same preserving.
There is no version of that psalm where the going out is covered and the coming in is not.
So let me turn and say it to you directly, because in your house the man in the doorway is the one nobody speaks over.
You are preserved coming in. Not one day, not when the house is quieter, not when whatever it is you are carrying has finally settled. Right now, walking back down that hall past the coats, you are inside the second half of a verse you have been quoting half of for twenty years. That is not my sentiment. That is what is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a written line down onto a real man in a real hallway.
Now, I want to name the wound before we lift anything, because lifting too early is how a man learns not to trust the lifting.
Somewhere in your life you learned that your job is the doorway.
Maybe it was handed to you. Maybe you took it because somebody had to and nobody else was going to. But you became the one who covers, and a man who covers stops picturing himself as covered. He is the roof. Roofs do not get rained on, in his head; they take the rain so the room stays dry.
That is a lie, and it is a gentle sounding one, and it has cost you more than you know.
Because here is the thing: the roof gets rained on more than anything else in the house. You have been out in every storm this family has had. You have simply never once said the words over yourself on the way back in.
And this next part is finished rather than pending, so hear it. You have the same preserving over you that you have been speaking over them, and it did not begin the day you started saying it. The word says from this time forth, and even for evermore, which is a phrase with no gap in it anywhere, and it is His Spirit who carries a written promise into a real house at a real hour of a real night.
The ocean has never once asked the shore to hold itself up. God made both, and He holds both, and He is not confused about which one is doing the work.
So we are going to say it walking in.
Not stop saying it on the step. Never that. That doorway blessing is a real work and it has kept people, and God has been in every one of them.
We are just going to add eleven words to the end of your evening. The same words, aimed the other way, spoken by you over you as you come back through your own door.
If your voice does something strange the first time, expect it, and do not read it as failure. Twenty years of speaking outward will do that.
So hear it said over you before you do it. You are covered coming in, and the covering is not something you generate for this family and then run out of; Psalm 121 was written long before this doorway, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings what is written and sets it down in a real hall, in a real house, on a real night.
And nothing has to feel different for this to be true. This is not about producing a feeling in a hallway. It is about a man standing under the second half of his own sentence.
Declare this over yourself
Say these over your own name. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that has been true every night you walked back down that hall alone; the authority in these words is His, delegated to you and carried in His Name, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written live in a real mouth. And however He answers about the thing you have been carrying, and He answers in His own way and His own manner, you are inside the preserving the whole time He is doing it.
- Doorway of this house, you are not a one way blessing, and my coming in is covered as surely as their going out. It is written that the LORD preserves the going out and the coming in, and He put both halves in the same sentence on purpose.
- Lie that says a roof does not get rained on, you are finished in this house, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit has been over me in every storm this family has had, and I am not standing outside my own shelter one more night.
- Lord, You preserve my coming in from this time forth and even for evermore, and Your word leaves no gap anywhere in that. I am walking back down my own hall tonight saying it over myself, and I am not turning the light off first.
