Help My UnbeliefPsalm 51:17

The Second Half Of The Sentence

This message is for the I believe you say at volume, and the second half of the sentence running underneath it that nobody in the room can hear

You said it with the whole room behind you and you meant it.

I believe.

Not shouted. You are past the stage of shouting things to prove them. You said it the way somebody says a thing they have decided, with a hand out, and about forty people said it back.

And underneath it, running at the same time, at a completely different volume, was the rest of the sentence.

Nobody heard that part. It is not audible. It has no words in it exactly, and if you had to put words on it, it would come out as something like: and I am not sure, and I have not been sure since February, and I am standing up here anyway.

The two of them happen simultaneously. That is what you have not been able to explain to anybody.

It is not that you say one thing and think another. It is that you have two things and they arrive together and they have been arriving together for months.

Let me say something before anything else.

I am not accusing you.

You did not lie to that room. A person with two halves is not a person with a false half, and I am not going to tell you that the first half is a performance, because it is not and you would know if it were.

I am saying I heard the second half. That is all.

What He does not despise

Here is a line at the end of a psalm written by somebody who had done real damage and knew it.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.Psalm 51:17

Notice the shape. He is not saying God tolerates a broken spirit. He is not saying God will work with it if nothing better is available.

He calls it the sacrifices of God. It is the offering. It is not the thing you bring instead of the offering, it is the thing itself, and David is a man who knew exactly how the offerings worked and chose that word deliberately.

And then he adds the phrase everybody remembers, and it is a negative on purpose. Thou wilt not despise. He knows what it feels like to bring something you suspect will be refused, and he says out loud that it will not be.

So here it is, said directly to you, in that doorway with the evening light behind you.

You are bringing something He calls an offering. Not one day, not once the second half resolves, not when you can say the first half with nothing running underneath it. Right now, with people still coming through and a child holding a drawing up at your knee, you are carrying exactly the thing Psalm 51 names, and it names it as the sacrifice rather than as the excuse. That is not my kindness. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit who takes a written line and lands it on a real woman in a real doorway.

Now, why has the second half stayed silent?

Because of the forty people.

That is the whole of it and it is not complicated. When a room says a thing back, the one who said it first becomes responsible for it, and a woman responsible for a thing does not put a wobble on the end of it in public.

That is not cowardice and it is not hypocrisy. That is a leader doing the arithmetic in half a second and getting it right, because a room did not need the second half at that moment and the judgment was sound.

But the second half needs saying somewhere, and it has not been said anywhere in months, and that is the actual problem rather than the wobble itself.

And hear this, because it is settled rather than pending. You have a broken half that is called an offering rather than a disqualification. The word says thou wilt not despise, and He put it in the negative because He knew what it costs to hand over something you expect to be refused, and it is His Spirit who carries a written line into a real building on a real evening.

Both halves are welcome. Not one of them tolerated while the other is received. Both.

The breakthrough

So we are going to say the second half somewhere.

Not from the front. Not to the forty. The judgment about the forty was right and nothing about it needs revisiting.

Once, out loud, tonight, to God, and then, if there is somebody like that old woman in your life, to her.

And the way we are going to say it is the way it was said first, in Mark, by a man who put both halves in the same breath and never withdrew either.

If it comes out badly, that is expected and it is not a failure. Months of running it silently underneath will do that.

So take this in before you speak. You are bringing what Scripture calls the sacrifices of God, and that classification was made long before February; Psalm 51 was written long before this evening, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what is written and sets it down in a real doorway, on a real night, with the light going behind you.

And it does not start being true when you feel it. It is true now. This is not about resolving anything in a doorway. It is about a woman letting the second half out of her mouth for the first time in months.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you are standing. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that has been true since February and through every service since; the authority in these words is His, delegated to you and carried in His Name, and His Spirit is the one who makes what is written speakable. And however He answers about what has been running underneath, and He answers in His own way and His own manner, you are inside the promise the whole time He is doing it.

  1. Second half of my sentence, you are not being hidden any more, and you are not disqualifying the first half. Psalm 51 calls a broken spirit the sacrifices of God, which makes it the offering rather than the thing brought instead of one.
  2. Responsibility I took on when forty people said it back, you were right at the time and you are not gagging me tonight, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit did not ask me to run half of myself silently for months.
  3. Lord, a broken and a contrite heart You will not despise, and Your word puts that in the negative because You know what it costs to hand over something I expect to be refused. Both halves are going out of my mouth tonight, in one breath, in Your hearing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
