The Question That Quieted The Room

This message is for the question you asked out loud once, the silence that followed it, and the fifteen years you have kept every question since to yourself

You were twenty three and the room was full and you asked it without thinking.

That is the detail that has stayed with you. You did not plan it. It came up in you and it came out, the way things do at twenty three, and it was not a hostile question and you were not showing off.

And the room went quiet.

Not shocked. Something worse than shocked. Awkward. Somebody laughed slightly and somebody else changed the subject and the older man at the head of the table said a sentence that was technically an answer and was actually a door closing.

And you learned something that evening, and you learned it thoroughly, in the way a person learns something at twenty three.

You have not asked one out loud since.

Fifteen years. Every question you have had, and you have had a great many because you are that kind of man, has been asked internally and answered internally or not answered at all.

You are the most hospitable man on your street and there is a whole room of yourself that nobody has ever been let into.

Let me say something before we go any further.

I am not correcting you.

You did nothing wrong at twenty three and you have done nothing wrong since. Learning not to ask in a room that punished asking is not cowardice, it is intelligence, and I am not going to reframe fifteen years of survival as a fault.

I am saying I know what happened in that room. That is all.

Reach hither thy hand

Here is a scene that everybody knows and almost nobody reads slowly.

Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.John 20:27

Look at what Jesus does, and look at what He does not do.

Thomas has said something extraordinary. He has said that he will not believe unless he can put his hand into the wound. That is not a polite question. In most rooms that would be the end of the conversation.

And Jesus comes into the room and goes straight to him. He does not address the group. He does not correct the wording. He offers His hands, and He offers His side, and He invites the exact investigation Thomas named.

Nobody laughed. Nobody changed the subject. The door did not close.

So here it is, said directly to you, in your own doorway with the lamps on.

You are welcome to bring the whole question, including the shape of it. Not one day, not once you have softened it, not when it is more respectable. Right now, standing where you are standing, you are being addressed by a Christ who walked across a room to a man with a blunt condition and met it exactly as stated. That is not my comfort. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit who takes a written line and lands it on a real man on a real evening.

Now, the plain thing, and I will not qualify it.

The questions are not why.

Not why anything in your life has gone the way it has gone. Fifteen years of unasked questions have not blocked anything and the asking of them would not have blocked anything either. I am not going to soften that or add a clause to it, because it has been softened for you before, and the softening is where the harm was done.

That evening at twenty three taught you something true about that room and something false about God, and the two got learned at the same moment, which is how it usually happens.

And hear this, because it is settled rather than pending. You have a Christ who crosses a room toward the one with the difficult condition. The word says reach hither thy hand, which is an invitation rather than a rebuke, and it is His Spirit who carries a written line into a real courtyard on a real night with the lamps lit.

The room went quiet. He did not.

The breakthrough

So we are going to get one question out of your mouth.

Not answer it. That may take years or may never happen in the way you would want, and I am not going to trade you a resolution for an obedience.

We are going to say it out loud, once, to God, in your own courtyard, in the shape it actually has.

If your voice does something odd, that is expected and it is not a failure. Fifteen years of internal asking will do that.

So take this in before you put your hand on your chest. You are invited to bring it in its actual form, and the invitation is older than the room that closed on you; John 20 was written long before you were twenty three, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what is written and sets it down in a real house, on a real night, with the lamps still burning.

And it does not start being true when you feel it. It is true now. This is not about producing confidence in a doorway. It is about a hospitable man letting somebody into one more room.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your hand over your heart. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that was true at twenty three in that room; the authority in these words is His, delegated to you and carried in His Name, and His Spirit is the one who makes what is written speakable. And however He answers about the question itself, and He answers in His own way and His own manner, you are inside the promise the whole time He is doing it.

  1. Silence that fell after my question, you are not the verdict of heaven, and you are not keeping my mouth shut any longer. John 20 says Jesus walked over to a man with a blunt condition and said reach hither thy hand, and that was an invitation rather than a rebuke.
  2. Lesson I learned at twenty three about what happens to a man who asks, you were half true and half a lie, and I am separating you in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit has never once changed the subject on me, and my questions are not why anything in my life is the way it is.
  3. Lord, You crossed a room toward the one with the hardest condition in it and You met it exactly as he stated it. Your word calls that reaching, so my hand is over my heart tonight and I am saying the question out loud in my own house.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
